One common mistake is installing a silt fence across a ditch where water flows at high velocity, which leads to immediate failure. Another error is failing to “J-hook” the ends of the silt fence, which allows water to simply run around the edges of the barrier. Placing a silt fence on a slope without trenching the bottom edge also renders the entire system ineffective against erosion.
